We are so grateful for all that everyone is doing to support lachlan. We've never had this much support from school before so it really is appreciated.

Gratitude from a parent- Little Lunch!

 Yesterday one of my parents of a student in my class ordered me a Little Lunch - which wasn't so little - it was amazing and what a wonderful appreciative gesture to make! 

I am thoroughly impressed with this random act of kindness appreciation for the work I have done so far - thank you! It was delicious!

digital file storage - organising the teacher life

Here is my handy tip for all new teachers out there, and perhaps anyone who hasn't done this before!

Forget about loads and loads of storage boxes - get yourself an external hard drive, you could start off with a USB. Create subject folders and then sub folders withing each subject folder. Scan any paper tasks you have and file them, save pdf's and video files.

I have a teaching resource digital collection of 250gb! See sample screenshots attached.

Another tip if you have a DVD recorder hard drive, record news and any relevant educational programmes- convert to digital files and save into your collection for educational use.

Daily 5 Reflections

I did the first day of daily 5 today. My students really enjoying self managing themselves but it's a work in progress for many,  even just ticking all the things off and it was quite step by step today. 

Anyway I'm looking forward to continuing as the variety and choice are great things.

Sorry for late reply Mark but I have so many emails that they are disappearing off my screen so quick as new ones arrive!!!

I started my Daily 5 Monday as well and its definitely a work in progress.  It is helping to encourage the children to do all those things and I have to allow time during to day to make sure they have ticked off what they need to.  I have told them its ok if there are a few gaps, thats just life!!

It is also making them realise how much they read, write and listen to stories during the day.

Hopefully it will help them progress with their literacy.

Super proud teacher moment

Super proud teacher moment and parent moment for the student's parents today. One of my 7 year old students who had been reading at level 1 for 2 years at a previous school, is now reading at level 2. Lots of peer celebrations for this student too. Both the student and I are working on moving to level 3 now.

TVNZ Classic God Defends NZ begins each day in my classroom

I want to tell everyone about something amazing and very patriotic that I have been doing with my delightful class of Year 3 and 4 students the past three weeks. Each morning 5 minutes before the morning bell for the start of the day goes, I play this classic TVNZ National anthem from days gone by . It tells my students that the day will shortly begin.
Their response has been simply amazing! After literally less than 2 minutes in, nearly all students are sitting beautifully in the mat space, and singing too. I'm also singing and often conducting them. At the end of the anthem they all come in perfectly on the word God (there is a tricky delay to navigate here so a great achievement you listen to this version) and all are great at holding the last note.
Then we do the roll and sing a waiata. It's a great start to every day and great to support our awesome country.

    I love it Mark!  In fact it brought tears to my eyes pretty quickly, and I realise how much Kiwi there is in me ( after all I have spent 1/2 my life in NZ.)   It is a wonderful song... a prayer to God really... and a wonderful tune. It is fantastic that it has such a positively powerful effect on your students and they will know the song for life now.  Good on you for experimenting in this way and setting such an exhilarating beginning of participation and solidarity for each day.

    Thanks so much for sharing it.    Can you sing the Maori version off by heart too? And what about the kids? By the end of the year they will be able to I'd think.

    
    

    PS the pictures are very muted, soft and unfocused...I guess intentionally, so as to concentrate on the words but the country is so spectacular in its scenery I feel I'd like to focus and brighten them up a little. What do you think?

    The music though is magnificent and that static singing of the word God at the end is just brilliant. Sometime you should record your kids singing along with the orchestra and soloists  too.... make a DVD of them singing it (their photo obvious in the group on the cover which has them all sitting on the mat, and that they can all give to their parents as a special Christmas gift or something. Probably copyright would prevent you doing such though.
